2008 Gala Breaks Tradition
Robert T. Angarola Awardee Announced!

Dr. Mario Milch of Kaiser Permanente will receive the Angarola Award at the November 8th, SCCPI Gala.

In past years the Angarola Award winner was a closely kept secret and announced only at the Gala, but this year SCCPI breaks from tradition.  The SCCPI board members believe that good news is to be shared, good work is to be recognized, and good people are to be honored. In this spirit, SCCPI holds the Gala to recognize the doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, advocates, and our Southern California leaders in the field of pain management.

The top Robert Angarola Award is given to the one individual deemed to have contributed most to improve pain  management over the past year and throughout a career.  The criteria for this award includes contributions to  cancer pain management; demonstrated excellence in clinical practice, education, or research in pain management; contributions to SCCPI and other professional   organizations; and most importantly, someone who is a role model for others.  There is no doubt that Dr. Milch fits the bill.

Dr. Milch has served nearly 31 years as a Kaiser Permanente physician. He is founding Medical Director of the Kaiser Permanente Hospice, Metro Los Angeles and was instrumental in developing the Chronic Pain Program at the Los Angeles Medical Center.  He has done extensive teaching and lecturing on pain management, end-of-life care, and palliation, as well as promoted the expansion of palliative care in  inpatient and  outpatient  settings.  He is board certified  in  Internal Medicine with Added Qualification in Geriatrics and board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He holds the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine.

SCCPI is keeping the tradition of honoring other pain management “stars” and needs you to nominate your colleagues, coworkers and others who make a difference in pain management.  These individuals and groups will also be honored at the Gala.

Please share the good news about the Gala. Mark your    calendars and save November 8, 2008 for the Gala and join us in honoring Dr. Milch along with other notewothy pain  management professionals and pain advocates. Gala nomination forms are on Pages 9 and 10. For more information on the 2008 Gala or how to nominate colleagues/groups for awards, go to http://sccpi.coh.org.
