17th Annual PRN Course a Resounding Success!

Over 120 nurses attended the 17th annual Pain Resource Nurse (PRN) Training Course September 15-17 on the City of Hope campus in Duarte, CA.  Participants represented seven states and including 10 from Pennsylvania.  We also had international participants, 9 from Canada and 1 from Taiwan.

Every year the Margo McCaffery Excellence in Pain Management Award is presented at the PRN course to a nurse who exemplifies the highest level of professional care in pain management. Michelle Johann, RN works in the Intensive Care Unit at the City of Hope and is this year’s Awardee. Michelle is a leader with a myriad of activities that improve patient care and advance the profession of nursing. She is able to meld wonderful clinical skills along with the role of advocacy both for the  patient and her profession which makes her the perfect recipient for the Margo McCaffery Award.

The PRN course could not happen without support from the American Cancer Society, and the Greater Los Angeles Oncology Nursing Society (GLAONS) and The Lamb Pain Foundation. This generous support allows us to keep registration affordable so cost is not a barrier to nurses’ education in pain management. We extend our sincere thanks for your support to advance the practice of pain management.

This year’s PRN course continued the tradition of providing high quality nursing education in pain management practice. Our 18th PRN course is in September 2009 and we hope to have some new innovations and surprises for this course.  Check the SCCPI website in 2009.
