Women in Pain Conference:
 Gender Matters

SCCPI is cosponsoring a timely and unique conference that will examine gender issues in pain management for consumers and healthcare professionals titled, Women in Pain: Gender Matters on May 30th 2008 at City of Hope, in Duarte, California. This innovative program invites women in pain, their supporters and healthcare professionals to come together to discuss pain management and quality of life issues.  The first Women in Pain Conference: Gender Matters is a joint effort of SCCPI and For Grace, a non profit organization passionately devoted to ensuring the ethical and equal treatment of all women in pain. The conference will feature nationally recognized experts and advocates. Keynote speakers and topics include Mary Bennett, MFA, from the American Pain Foundation, “Call to Action to Improve the Lives of Women in Pain”; Judy Paice, PhD, RN, FAAN, President of the American Pain Society, “Gender Differences in Clinical Treatment of Pain”; and Diane Hoffmann, JD, MS, from the University of Maryland, “The Disparity toward Women in Pain.”

For Grace is inspired by the true-life story of the founder and spokesperson, Cynthia Toussaint, a former ballerina who has suffered after a dance injury with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and Fibromyalgia for 25 years.  For her full story and information on For Grace please see http://www.forgrace.org/women/in/pain_home/.

This conference now expands SCCPI’s vision to promote pain relief from other pain conditions and encourage greater consumer participation.
